Handwritten Birthday Cards: A Heartfelt Way To Tell Your Coworker Happy Birthday

Nowadays, it appears like the majority of communication is done via email or text, and while I am in favor of effective technology, that does not mean we should overlook the value of a handwritten card. In fact, studies have shown that handwritten cards are more effective than email or text messages because they are more likely to be remembered and appreciated. Not only that, it's a simplistic and inexpensive way to build and maintain relationships. I mean, let's be honest, coworkers are a big part of our lives. We spend more time with them than we do with most other people, and sometimes they become like family. So why not take a few minutes out of our day to let them know we appreciate them?

Now, you're probably thinking - what should I say? And that's a valid question. I've stared blankly at a card before giving up and just writing "Happy Birthday" several times myself. So, if you find yourself struggling, consider these ideas by Handwrytten:

  • “Hope your special day is full of happiness, fun, and laughter!”

  • “May your birthday be full of joy, laughter, and happiness!”

  • “You deserve all good things on your birthday. Sending you warm wishes and happy thoughts!”

  • “Sending good wishes and happy thoughts to you on your birthday!”

Another great birthday card idea for coworkers is to include a funny message or joke inside. If you know your coworker well, then you probably have a good sense of their sense of humor. Use this to your advantage and write something that will make them laugh out loud. Just be sure not to go too over-the-top, as you don't want to offend anyone. SunTrust Blog has some great examples, here are my favs:

  • "With an outstanding personality and a brilliant mind, an outstanding coworker like you is really hard to find. Happy Birthday."

  • "Today being your birthday, the office came to a consensus that no one works your nerves. Obviously, everything will go back to its previous state come tomorrow."

  • "You are so cool you even make the long-distance between Monday to Friday seem like a stroll in the park. Here is to another fantastic year of achievements upon achievements."

If you're looking for something more heartfelt, then you can always write something that expresses your gratitude for having them in your life. A simple, yet heartfelt message like this will definitely stay with them long after their birthday has passed.

  • "I'm so grateful to have you as a coworker and friend. I hope your birthday is as wonderful as you are."

  • "You make coming into work each day a joy. I hope your birthday is as happy as you make me."

  • "I feel so lucky to know you and to be able to call you my friend. Wishing you all the best on your special day."

Now that we've discussed what to say, it's important that we make sure our coworker can read it! Yes, I'm talking to all of you with Doctor's handwriting (if you know, you know). So, let me let you on a secret. What if you don't have to write the card at all? Yes, you read me right. You don't have to. Handwrytten uses custom-designed handwriting robots that hold real pens to write out the notes in the handwriting style of your choice. AND, they do not put “Handwrytten” anywhere on the cards or envelopes. So, your coworker will never know you didn't write it yourself.
